The persistent nature of these molecules and the worrying toxicological properties of many small molecules require a cautious and restrictive approach to their use, particularly in the absence of sufficient long-term data on their environmental and human health impacts throughout their life cycle, even for molecules such as polymers that appear to pose the least danger. The exceptional properties of these molecules, which are often difficult to replace, therefore require a proactive approach by manufacturers in the value chain to reduce their use and/or their health and environmental impact by promoting a strategy of phasing them out or, in exceptional cases, controlling their end of life.
