Family businesses are one of the cornerstones of the French economy. Our economy could be in even better shape if we had more medium-sized companies, because a company's solidity increases with its size. Unfortunately, too few companies in France succeed in meeting the challenge of transferring ownership when the generation changes. If the cost of the transfer is often the reason given, it is mainly because governance and strategy are poorly defined. They seem to be the key to growth and thus the driving force behind sustainability.
