Description
At the age of 30, Sara Balzer has established herself as one of the leading figures in world fencing. Born in Strasbourg, she discovered sabre fencing at the age of 8 at the Strasbourg Université Club, following in her older sister's footsteps. It didn't take long for her potential to be spotted: she entered the CREPS in Strasbourg, then, at just 14, won her first national title in the under-17 age group.
In 2013, she joined the INSEP and began her international career at the Chicago World Cup, while continuing her studies in communications. She confirmed her ascent in 2019 at the Summer Universiade, where she collected two medals. Two years later, she finished second on the team podium at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The 2022-2023 season marks a turning point: five individual podium finishes, including two World Cup victories and a European runner-up title, take her to the top of the world rankings in women's sabre.
On July 29, 2024, she became individual Olympic vice-champion at the Paris Games, punctuating a 2023-2024 season marked by seven individual podium finishes. In June 2025, she helped the French women's sabre team to victory at the World Cup in Lima.
Beyond the slopes, Sara Balzer studied communications and cultivates a keen interest in business psychology, the animal cause and ecology. Empathetic, a go-getter and resilient, she draws her strength from courage, perseverance and the ability to question herself. Her passions: cinema, sport and nature.
