THE TRUTH
It starts with laziness: by asserting that my truth is THE truth, I no longer need to confront reality. It's so complex, it eludes all certainties, it resists me. This then turns into the pleasure of imposing my vision, into refusing the right to rebuttal. What a feeling of power! And, in a great reversal, it all ends in submission. I reach the end of my laziness, bowing down before the boss. Untruth reigns, and it is incarnated in a tyrant whom I want to obey. I recognize myself in him, he allows me to be like him. And he finds the same obvious enjoyment as I do, so he encourages me along this path. Soon, the logic of institutions and law takes over, and obscurity reigns for a long time to come. That's why we need to reaffirm that truth exists. It's the truth of science, the truth of raw facts, the truth of statistics, the truth of experimentation, the truth of the laboratory. It's abrasive, it doesn't coddle us. It is opposed to opinion. It is our compass in the fog.
