The partnership has a turbulent history, but France and Germany are pillars of European integration. Both guide EU actions, currently facing major challenges exacerbated by the war on the outskirts of Europe, plus issues such as the energy crisis, the need for strategic autonomy, and the competitiveness of European industry. Yet, the bilateral relationship is under pressure and differences have been publicly expressed.
